#5FF: 5 Fandom Friday: Characters I Would Name My Kids After

So this week’s #5FF was a bit tricky for me because I also had to consider how each name would be pronounced in English & Spanish; i.e. a bunch of LOTR names would be tricky.  Here is what I came up with …

1. Lincoln, aka: Link (Legend of Zelda)

I adore the Legend of Zelda series & when I was checking out, fellow FGB, Miss Nessa’s #5FF post, I felt she was speaking directly to my heart when she had this crafty combo (name/nickname) on her list.  Lincoln is a bit weird in Spanish, but seeing as it is shared with a very famous former US President, the pronunciation is semi-standardized.  Link is the same in either language, FTW!

2. & 3. Leia & Luke (Star Wars)

Badass princess & Jedi prince?!  These names could definitely work in both languages & would be amazing for twins, for obviou .

4. Andrew, aka: Ender (Ender’s Game)

I started reading the Ender’s Game series in high school & loved it so much that I devoured the entire series as it was released.

5. Melody (Doctor Who)

River is an amazing name … in English … because in Spanish it is just going to be weird: “Rio” or “Ree-veh-rrr”.  Ugh.  Melody, however, is much easier on the ears & is really pretty to boot!

Honorable mention for my future fur-babies (pets):

1. Sly (Sly Cooper video game series)
2. Spike (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

SDCC Countdown series

Couldn’t get SDCC 2015 badges, now what?

I was one of the many who embarked on the quest to secure SDCC 2015 badges this past Saturday during the Online Open Registration.  Unfortunately, also like many, I was left in the purgatory that is the spinning blue dot waiting room for a total of 2 hours with no spoils at all.SDCCOOR-ends

This was only my second year trying to secure badges to SDCC.  My first was 2014 & I had the SDCC gods smile upon me with 4 Day badge plus Preview night on my very first try.  Therefore, not getting a badge this year was disappointing, but not wholly unexpected. I know of many who have tried for years without securing a badge at all.   I am by no means bitter that I didn’t get a badge, just bummed because I was looking forward to reliving all the geeky goodness I reveled in last year.

Is there a glimmer of hope that there will be a badge resale?  SDCC-2015-resale-unlikelySeeing as there wasn’t a badge resale at all last year, the outlook is grim.  Badges sold out in under one hour this past Saturday, so I doubt there will be that many people who will return their badges.

So, now that the harsh reality of not securing a single badge for SDCC this year has set in, what is my next move?

I’m not really sure.  My going to San Diego at all is definitely up in the air at this point.  Last year, I was completely consumed with SDCC badge related everything, that I really only had time & energy for 2 unofficial events.  Was there a lot concurrently going on in San Diego that I could have seen/done? Absolutely!  I just didn’t have the time nor energy to cram more than I already was able to cram.  [Check out my overly ambitious panel schedule for last year!]  I didn’t get a chance to do anything at PetCo Park, nor NerdHQ, nor Game-con.  But, is the cost of lodging counterbalanced by all of the unofficial/other events?  I don’t know.  I would be going alone again, which means I would be the sole person paying for a room during the peak of San Diego tourism.  It makes a lady think twice.

I’d love to hear in the comments what you have done in the past or are planning for this year.

5 Fandom Friday: Things I’ve Bought But Haven’t Read/Played/Watched Yet

I initially had a hard time thinking of 5 things that I had purchased, but still hadn’t gotten around to reading/playing/watching.  Of course, once the superficial search was over, I realized I have a bit of these hiding in the recesses of my mind & shelves.  Without further ado…

  1. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeros (PS4)
I have been a fan of the Metal Gear series for a better part of my life.  I’m pretty sure my sniper preference has something to do with the sneaking this game promotes.  I bought this as one of the first games when I bought myself the PS4 for my birthday … back in September 2014.  Still haven’t even loaded it, I’m ashamed to admit.  I got sucked into Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag & then Destiny.  All of that, plus work, means I haven’t been in the needed headspace to embark in the symphony of destruction that is Metal Gear Solid.  I have high hopes for the springtime!
  2. Orphan Black (TV)
Season 1 is sitting in my Amazon Prime queue, taunting me.  I’ve seen the same episode at least 5 different times, but still haven’t seen the entire season.  The episode that seems to be the only one that airs on TV when I seem to catch it is the on with the club where the do human “upgrades”.  I really liked the flow of the show & am amazed at Tatiana Maslany’s acting ability.  I have a long trip coming up, so I should try & download the season in order to watch them on the plane or at the airport.
  3. Dorothy Must Die (Book)
I heard about this book last year & bought it from the Kindle store … also back in September 2014.  I guess the birthday rush got to me.  I don’t know what to say; I can also use this as a much needed distraction during long airport waits during my upcoming trip.
  4. FIFA 15 (PS4)
I wrote about my hesitation in playing FIFA games in the past in a previous post, but one of my good friends is all about this game & just got a PS4.  I downloaded the demo to see if we could play online together.  I must confess that I haven’t loaded it yet.  The idea of this game still stresses me out.
  5. Yes Please (Book)
This book by Amy Peohler has been on my mind as a book I want to read for a very long time & yet I don’t know why I haven’t actually gotten around to reading it.  Again, it sits on my digital bookshelf awaiting my attention. I love Amy Peohler.  I need to make a point of remembering to read this when I get some free time, instead of remembering I want to read it when I am absolutely swamped (classic!).

So, that is that.  I’ve revealed my procrastination to the interwebs.

SDCC Open Reg is coming!

So, if you have wanted to go to SDCC this summer & have not been under a rock in the last week, you know that the open registration for badges is being held this Saturday, February 21st!  Squee!

My first SDCC experience was last year, after realizing much too late in 2013 that I needed to register for a Member ID FIRST ( a classic newbie mishap) & therefore having to wait a year for my opportunity.  I absolutely hit the jackpot right out of the gate & was able to get a Four Day Badge plus Preview Night for SDCC 2014!  It was everything my little geek heart ever wanted: got all possible badges, secured a hotel room on the shuttle route during Hotel-mageddon, got into Hall H with an unheard of 15 minute wait, got into Ballroom 20 with approximately 30 minute wait, & many more SDCC blessings.Selfie-waiting-in-line-at-the-Amazon-Geek-Boutique-(titled)

As I looked forward to SDCC 2015, I was (im)patiently awaiting the Pre-reg sale with baited breath … only to have it land on the very day of my half-brother’s wedding  … at a resort with wonky wifi & equally sketchy cell coverage!  Needless to say, I was unable to successfully log into the waiting room & thus missed out on the opportunity to secure my badges back in November 2014.pre-reg-sdcc2015-fail

Now, the date for Registration is a few days away & I am looking forward to taking my chances of securing my SDCC 2015 badges, along with a gazillion others.  Maybe not a gazillion, but definitely more demand than there are available badges.  Here is to hoping my SDCC luck continues!  May the odds be ever in our favor!

5 Fandom Friday: 5 Fictional Couples I Ship

I’m very excited to finally join in on the 5 Fandom Friday series, especially with such a great topic!

  1. Buffy & Spike (Buffy The Vampire Slayer)via Pinterest.
    via Pinterest.

I know that Angel was her first & I thought he was an amazing character, but Spike was able to love Buffy without a soul!  That is craziness & speaks volumes to his depth as a character.

  2. Hitomi & Van (The Vision of Escaflowne)

I won’t give any spoilers away for any of you who still haven’t gotten a chance to watch this incredible anime series (don’t watch the movie adaptation first, for it is not faithful to this TV series), but these two were made for each other.

  3. Joey & Pacey (Dawson’s Creek)

Dawson was such an idiot & I was never quite sure what was his problem. Pacey, however, was all about Joey.  I admit that I am enamored with Joshua Jackson to this day because he was Pacey.

  4. Fred & Gunn (Angel)

Why couldn’t these two have lasted longer?! Damn you, Joss, & your tortured love stories! <shakes fist>

  5. Princess Leia & Han

Both are such badasses in their own right, but together (plus Chewy) they are unstoppable! Quite possibly, my first ship.

Honorable Mentions:

Bones & Booth (Bones)
Amy & Rory (Doctor Who)
The 10th Doctor & Rose (Doctor Who)
Ponyo & Sousuke (Ponyo)
Chihiro & Haku (Spirited Away)
Hawkeye & Mustang (Full Metal Alchemist)

So, there you go!  Please feel free to leave me a comment about what you thought of my list &/or suggest a link-back.

Superhero archetype personaility quiz

Good to know: Turns out I’m a D-4 Mentalist.

I was catching up on Facebook the other day & was pleased to see that one of my friends had recently completed, & of course posted results of, “What is Your Superhero Archetype?”  My geekiness couldn’t resist; so, of course, I checked it out.  The personality quiz asks you 12 or so questions based on Jungian theory before it reveals your archetype.  I got D-4 Mentalist, with notable members including Professor X & Martian Manhunter.

First of all, I have always regarded myself as “brainy” and so this result was a comfortable one.  Secondly, I apparently shared a personality archetype with the Martian Manhunter!  How did this test know that the Martian Manhunter is one of my absolute favorite members of the Justice League?!  J’onn J’onnz is such a complex & badass character, and wholly underrated IMO.  And while she is not mentioned in the results, Emma Frost is also a D-4 mentalist, & well she is the Queen of Badass.  I’m not sure why this was so reassuring.  Hehe, I guess that is what makes it a fun personality test.

Here is an image of my complete results:

Have you taken this quiz?  What did you get?  Did it resonate with what you perceive your personality to be?

Back in the saddle again!

So, I pretty much fell off the face of the blogsphere for a couple of months, due to life.  But one of my goals this year is to be more consistent on here & share what I’m geeking out over, not just on Pinterest (which I love!), Twitter (which I am getting better at), & Instagram.  I’m not hugely active on FB yet in regards to my blog, but it is also in the works.

Anyway, this is a quick recap of what has been keeping me for posting over the last months:

I went to FanExpo Canada & lucked out by getting a last minute resale ticket to the Doctor Who panel with Matt Smith & Arthru Darvill!

Got to attend my first Masquerade at a Con while at FanExpo (check out more images on my Instagram feed!):

Just a few of the sights I was privy to during & after the FanExpo Canada 2014 Masquerade.

I bought myself a PS4 as a birthday present! Yay! But I didn’t really get a chance to start playing until a couple months later.  Started playing Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag & Destiny, while I have Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes waiting in the wings for a bit down the line when I have more time.  I’ll post on my gaming adventures in a future post.

I also lucked out & was able to go to Hawaii with a really great friend to celebrate both of our birthdays!  A first-time to Hawaii for both of us & it was spectacular!

Then, high season began at work & that has been a bit all-consuming of my time & mental energy.  But now that things have settled into a more constant groove, I have decided to get beck into blogging, since it was very fulfilling last year.

What I will focus on this year will range from travel, to gaming, to learning … I guess to being adventurous in all the wonderfully complex & unexpected ways life presents itself to me.  All the while, not letting my sneakily perfectionist tendencies get the better of me & prevent me from publishing my posts because I don’t have ALL of the pictures or images I want to include (see how I was able to post this without including the zip-lining picture, even though I really wanted to do it!).  Sometimes, enough is good enough.  Maybe a mantra I should repeat in order to progress & keep from allowing myself to stagnate.
