Crafty Geek Corner: DIY Covertly Geeky T-shirts/Jackets/Sweaters

In this new blog series, Crafty Geek Corner, I will highlight my favorite pins each Monday.  This will hopefully accomplish two of my goals: 1) continue time management & blog consistency, & 2) share more ways to geek out over fandoms with all of you!

As you can easily tell from the sidebar of my blog, I am a wee bit obsessed with Pinterest. One of my favorite new boards is Crafty Geek. I don’t really have the time to get around and try these out, but I am enamored with the ideas & geeky focus. If I ever do get around to crafting, I would definitely begin with these projects.

DIY Covertly Geeky T-shirts, Jackets, & Sweaters oh my!

For this first post, I wanted to start with something I could definitely tackle over the weekend … once my time management skills are better honed. I love t-shirts, much to my mom’s objections of them making me age down. I own a couple of geekdom tees, mostly Zelda & Rogue, & I must admit that these types of shirts can skew teenager if I am not consciously trying to dress them up a bit. So, the thought of creating my own t-shirt that could be a bit more “adult” is very tempting. Also, in preparation for this post, it occurred to me that I could also modify light outerwear to also covertly display my fandoms, but in a more sophisticated manner.

Star Wars Rebel Jacket

As you can tell from my blog’s header, one of the things I geek out over the most is Star Wars & with the upcoming movie by J.J. Abrams, I am definitely in the mood for trying this DIY out from geek with curves.  Granted, I don’t live anywhere jackets are truly that necessary, but I’m sure this could easily be applicable to a DIY t-shirt or tank.  Oooh, lightbulb! I am definitely going to do this in a racer back tank top!  I would use the following symbols as reference though, pin courtesy of www.psd-dude.com:

Row 1: Alliance For The Republic(Rebel Alliance), Jedi Order, Galactic Empire, Galactic Senate
Row 2: Jedi order with ring, New Jedi Order, New Republic Department of Research and Development, Black Sun
Row 3: Mandalorians, Galactic Federation of Free Alliances, Confederacy of Independent Systems, Sith Empire
Row 4: Two X-Wing Pilot helmet markings

DIY Galaxy TARDIS T-shirt

An example of when getting bleach on your dark clothes is actually a good thing! This pin comes from the blog, 3 Chic Geeks. While the blog instructs you to use fabric paint, I’m sure bleach could also work in a pinch.  I love the subtle depth this tee has & that it looks more grown up than just a bold outlined TARDIS. Plus, this is a sneaky & subversive way to flag my geek flag, much like the Doctor Who Van Gogh leggings I already own & love.

DIY Assassin’s Creed Ottoman Empire crest

I love this idea because I think it would look great done in fabric paint or with bleach. This pin comes from Theatreorchid‘s post on Craftster.org.  The Ottoman Assassin’s Creed (AC) crest is ornate enough that it isn’t as obvious as the other AC crests, but is at once recognizable to a fellow fan.  I think this would look really great on a sweater or cardigan, especially on the front-right lapel area

Well, that is all for today!  I’m sure that I will come across more great DIY t-shirt pins to share in the future.  In the meantime, feel free to share links to your own DIY geek-inspired t-shirt posts in the comments.  I’ll gladly pin them to my Crafty Geek board!

5 Fandom Friday: Things I’ve Bought But Haven’t Read/Played/Watched Yet

I initially had a hard time thinking of 5 things that I had purchased, but still hadn’t gotten around to reading/playing/watching.  Of course, once the superficial search was over, I realized I have a bit of these hiding in the recesses of my mind & shelves.  Without further ado…

  1. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeros (PS4)
I have been a fan of the Metal Gear series for a better part of my life.  I’m pretty sure my sniper preference has something to do with the sneaking this game promotes.  I bought this as one of the first games when I bought myself the PS4 for my birthday … back in September 2014.  Still haven’t even loaded it, I’m ashamed to admit.  I got sucked into Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag & then Destiny.  All of that, plus work, means I haven’t been in the needed headspace to embark in the symphony of destruction that is Metal Gear Solid.  I have high hopes for the springtime!
  2. Orphan Black (TV)
Season 1 is sitting in my Amazon Prime queue, taunting me.  I’ve seen the same episode at least 5 different times, but still haven’t seen the entire season.  The episode that seems to be the only one that airs on TV when I seem to catch it is the on with the club where the do human “upgrades”.  I really liked the flow of the show & am amazed at Tatiana Maslany’s acting ability.  I have a long trip coming up, so I should try & download the season in order to watch them on the plane or at the airport.
  3. Dorothy Must Die (Book)
I heard about this book last year & bought it from the Kindle store … also back in September 2014.  I guess the birthday rush got to me.  I don’t know what to say; I can also use this as a much needed distraction during long airport waits during my upcoming trip.
  4. FIFA 15 (PS4)
I wrote about my hesitation in playing FIFA games in the past in a previous post, but one of my good friends is all about this game & just got a PS4.  I downloaded the demo to see if we could play online together.  I must confess that I haven’t loaded it yet.  The idea of this game still stresses me out.
  5. Yes Please (Book)
This book by Amy Peohler has been on my mind as a book I want to read for a very long time & yet I don’t know why I haven’t actually gotten around to reading it.  Again, it sits on my digital bookshelf awaiting my attention. I love Amy Peohler.  I need to make a point of remembering to read this when I get some free time, instead of remembering I want to read it when I am absolutely swamped (classic!).

So, that is that.  I’ve revealed my procrastination to the interwebs.

Back in the saddle again!

So, I pretty much fell off the face of the blogsphere for a couple of months, due to life.  But one of my goals this year is to be more consistent on here & share what I’m geeking out over, not just on Pinterest (which I love!), Twitter (which I am getting better at), & Instagram.  I’m not hugely active on FB yet in regards to my blog, but it is also in the works.

Anyway, this is a quick recap of what has been keeping me for posting over the last months:

I went to FanExpo Canada & lucked out by getting a last minute resale ticket to the Doctor Who panel with Matt Smith & Arthru Darvill!

Just a few of the sights I was privy to during & after the FanExpo Canada 2014 Masquerade.

I bought myself a PS4 as a birthday present! Yay! But I didn’t really get a chance to start playing until a couple months later.  Started playing Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag & Destiny, while I have Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes waiting in the wings for a bit down the line when I have more time.  I’ll post on my gaming adventures in a future post.

I also lucked out & was able to go to Hawaii with a really great friend to celebrate both of our birthdays!  A first-time to Hawaii for both of us & it was spectacular!

Then, high season began at work & that has been a bit all-consuming of my time & mental energy.  But now that things have settled into a more constant groove, I have decided to get beck into blogging, since it was very fulfilling last year.

What I will focus on this year will range from travel, to gaming, to learning … I guess to being adventurous in all the wonderfully complex & unexpected ways life presents itself to me.  All the while, not letting my sneakily perfectionist tendencies get the better of me & prevent me from publishing my posts because I don’t have ALL of the pictures or images I want to include (see how I was able to post this without including the zip-lining picture, even though I really wanted to do it!).  Sometimes, enough is good enough.  Maybe a mantra I should repeat in order to progress & keep from allowing myself to stagnate.

Geek Out: E3 2014 Coverage (Part 1)

So, one of my favorite times of the year is here: E3!  I love watching the live stream of the presentations & finding out what is coming out in the next year & beyond.  It is a lot of information to take in, especially during such a short amount of time, but I will do my best to discuss the highlights of what has already been released that have me geeking out.  Here is Part 1 of my E3 2014 Geek Out!

  1. Legend of Zelda (Wii U)
So, as you probably already know, I love Zelda games.  Nintendo has had me buying new systems since I was a child (granted, it was my mom buying the console systems & games back then – Thanks, Mom!), sometimes for the sole purpose of playing the new Legend of Zelda game.  Seriously.  I’m not ashamed of it because they are so splendid & great.  The latest game, slated to come out in 2015, brings Link into an open-world concept that is slightly mind-boggling.  If you are a die-hard Zelda fan, you know this is thrilling!    Damn you, Nintendo, for convincing my little gamer heart to fork over rupees for the Wii U!  You evil geniuses!  Check out this trailer with some actual game play!
  2. Assassin’s Creed: Unity (PS4, Xbox One, & PC)
These games are ALWAYS gorgeous, plus I love sneak assassinations.  The fact that co-op is now part of the regular storyline is also very exciting.  I can hardly explain how excited I am about this upcoming game.
  3. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (PS4)
I have enjoyed this series since its inception.  Well, I wasn’t a fan of the zombies at the end of the first game nor was I thrilled with the final enemies in the second one being hopped-up humans … well, the case is I am usually annoyed with the final enemies, but it is still such an enjoyable gaming experience.  I love the puzzles, the climbing, the sneaking, the fighting, the gorgeous graphics, & the voice acting.  This is possibly the last in the series — the game’s title & Sully saying, “Alright, one last time,” in the trailer could still be a psych out with a prequel or something down the line <fingers crossed> (think Metal Gear Solid, see below!) — so I will definitely be playing this one when it comes out in 2015!
  4. Hyrule Warriors (Wii U)
Legend of Zelda + Dynasty Warriors = Hyrule Warriors!!!!!!  Okay, so this is the melding of two of my favorite franchises. My love for all things Legend of Zelda has already been discussed in this post, but I also love the hack & slash beauty of Dynasty Warriors; it is my guilty pleasure.  When I saw this game was announced & that the playable demo on the E3 floor had Zelda being a bad ass herself as one of the playable characters, well my heart was set.  As if a new open-concept Legend of Zelda wasn’t enough, you had to seal the deal, Nintendo!
  5. Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain (PS4 & Xbox One)
This looks as serious & weird as I have become accustomed to when it comes to Metal Gear Solid, especially the cinematic trailers.  There is so much blood in the trailer, & the robotic arm?!  What?!  Poor Snake just can’t seem to catch much of a break, which makes it fitting that Jack Bauh … I mean Keifer Sutherland will be voicing him this time around.  So, yeah, I will definitely be checking this game out when it is released on the PS4 in 2015.

I don’t currently own any of the current next-gen consoles, mostly because I didn’t feel there was anything terribly exciting on them to warrant the upgrade price tag.  I already knew that the 4th quarter of 2014 was going to be huge in terms of new games hitting the market & I had already set aside money to buy a PS4.  But between the two Zelda games, I am now seriously saving in order to purchase a Wii U.  Of course, I am sure there are other games that will make the purchase even sweeter, but Nintendo likes to parcel out big news throughout E3 & is not confined to one big tell-all presentation.

Of course there is still more to my E3 Geek Out, so make sure to check out Parts 2 & 3!

Showing my geekiness via my iPhone 4S

So, I love my tech!  Video games, computers, gadgets, cellphones, & more.  I’ve been jailbreaking my iPhone since back when I had a 3G!  I just love having control of my iPhone.  One of the ways I like to express my geek side is by adding tweaks & themes to my handy iPhone.  Currently, I am sporting a mix of fandoms on my lock screen that I wanted to share:

iphone lockscreen

I’m sporting Doctor Who logo in place of my carrier name thanks to Zeppelin & Doctor Who Mega carrier pack, changed my slider to include MegaMan, & instead of the stock camera grabber icon I have Star Wars Rebel Logo.

I like to switch the look up, so I am probably going to mix it up again in a week.  I figured I should take not of what I had already chosen & what had motivated me to choose each item in the first place. This way I can have guidelines when looking for replacements.  There is no shortage of tweaks & themes, so without an idea it can be quite daunting.  I used to have my wifi signal strength themed with Super Mario Bros. mushrooms: red was weak, orange was good, & green was excellent.  Haven’t been able to find a replacement compatible with iOS7, but I am constantly checking for something like that.

On top of the visual expression of my geekiness, I also have ringtones & alert sounds from Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong Level 1, Super Mario Bros., Doctor Who, Chuck, & Assassin’s Creed.  One lesson I learned the hard way: the TARDIS sound is awesome when you are expecting it, but out of no where it can be pretty jarring & a bit freaky.

How do you express your geek side via your tech: computers, smartphones, video game consoles, & more?

SDCC Countdown series

Cosplaying at San Diego Comic-Con 2014

The first con I attended was MegaCon in Orlando, FL close to 10 years ago.  It was a very last minute, disorganized affair.  I definitely didn’t get the most out of my experience because we only bought an one-day pass, had to drive to Orlando, & got there close to 2 PM.  Needless to say, I wore regular casual wear, as it was my first con experience.  Had I known what I would have in store, I would have definitely have brought more cash & insisted we got there early. We didn’t get to see any panels, but I insisted we stay to watch the Masquerade.  There was a lot of Fullmetal Alchemist cosplaying, as well as Cowboy Bebop. I bought a couple of t-shirts, but nothing else due to limited cash on hand.

In order to get the most out of my upcoming SDCC experience, I have decided I am going to cosplay.  So, with SDCC less than 80 days away, I am seriously starting to finish up my cosplaying plan of attack!  I will ambitiously be attempting to cosplay all 5 days on SDCC.  As a first time cosplayer, this may prove to be a tall order, but I’m planning big so that I can always adjust as conditions change.  Obviously after deciding I would be cosplaying, I had to figure out who I would be cosplaying as.

The brainstorming began by acknowledging my limitations:

  • I’m currently not able to get too crafty to make intricate components for my outfits.
  • I am not wig-savvy, so long dark brown hair was what I had to work with.
  • I have trouble maintaining my core body temperature regulated, so I’d need to be able to use layers that I could adjust as needed, but not lose the identity of my chosen cosplay character.
  • Comfortable foot attire is a must.

With this list, I began trying to see who I would cosplay as.  My first instinct was Carmen San Diego because I loved her, the video games, & the TV show!

Carmen San Diego

Requirements:

  1. Red trench coat (could buy)
  2. Red hat (could buy)
  3. Black gloves (check)
  4. Yellow scarf (could buy)
  5. Loose, long dark hair (check)
  6. Maybe tiny versions of the Eiffel Tower or other monuments I would have stolen (could buy online).

The problem was that if I got hot & took off my coat, then what?  So, the brainstorming continued.

Next, I was talking with my best friend, with whom I geek out about video games & football (see Time Crisis II discussion in my arcade post), & we came up with Lara Croft.

Requirements:

  1. Long brown hair in pony tail/braid (check)
  2. Shorts/Pants (check)
  3. Black fingerless gloves (check)
  4. Turquoise tank top (check)
  5. Thigh holsters (could buy online)
  6. 2 play hand guns (could buy online)
  7. Small leather backpack (could buy online & I don’t need much convincing to buy a bag)
  8. Hiking boots (check)
  9. Various options for jacket or hoodie (could buy)

We had a winner!  I checked out possible items on Amazon & scored big.  The guns are originally orange, but that isn’t anything a little spray paint can’t fix & they come with the thigh holsters.  I can have the holsters altered/reinforced a bit if needed, but other than some hair gel, I should be good.

One down!

I’ve seen various Assassin’s Creed cosplay pictures on Pinterest, which had me dying to try it.  I was giddy about gender-bending Ezio, but my mom brought up a good point: the hood makes it hard for anyone to see my face & for me to see everything around me. I was going to SDCC for the very first time; I wanted to meet people & see as much as possible, so this idea would hinder both those objectives.  Also, I’d have to really have intricate accessories, so that if I needed to take off the coat, I’d still look like an Assassin.  And so, my dream of being an Assassin would have to wait for a future SDCC or other Con.  Once, I know how I’m likely to react to walking around all day at SDCC & whether I’d probably overheat or not.

I am freakishly pale right now, because I have had a couple of health issues this year and thus have seen little sun. So my genius mother said, “Could you go as Morticia Addams?”  YES, yes I can! I geek out over the Addam’s Family movie all the time & have made my mother watch it a couple times, so it was actually quite shocking that I hadn’t thought of this earlier.  Anjelica Huston & Raul Julia were perfectly cast as Morticia & Gomez Addams.

Requirements:

  1. Pale skin, enhance with makeup (check)
  2. Tight, black mermaid shape dress (could buy)
  3. Black lace to add to black dress (could buy & add to dress without too much work)
  4. Makeup for intense smokey eyes & red lips (check)
  5. Loose, long dark hair (check)
  6. Blood red nail polish (could buy)
  7. A silk red rose (could buy)
  8. Gothic rings (could buy)

So I had another one down, three more to go!

I decided I wanted to be a classic super hero & started looking for options. Wonder Woman was a possibility, but I thought I would get too cold & I wasn’t sure wearing a corset an entire day was gonna be the best idea.  I didn’t want to wear a wig, so I was looking at the brunettes out there in the super ‘verse.  I came up with Kitty Pryde, but I couldn’t find a way to make it work for me right now.  Did I really want to have to carry a dragon the entire day?  I thought of Catwoman, especially since Anne Hathaway’s version had been a brunette, but all the Catwoman costumes I found were either very slutty or full body, but near transparent, so no to that idea.

Then I saw that Amazon had a Female Green Lantern costume that had rave reviews.  It came with a green mask & a ring.  A huge plus, it was not transparent!  I figured I could always spruce it up & that it would be a good foundation.  If anything, I could be Jade if I wanted to get specific.

Requirements:

  1. Green body suit (could buy)
  2. Green eye mask (could buy, included)
  3. Green Lantern ring (could buy, included, or upgrade if needed)
  4. White opera gloves (could buy)
  5. Smokey eye makeup (check)
  6. Black boots (check)

We had another winner!  Now, I could participate in the DC Cosplayer Photo Shoot on Saturday of SDCC!  Just two left!

I have a full length dress in leopard print from a previous Halloween costume, which I am repurposing into an interpretation of Pebbles Flintstone all grown up.  I will just need to make a bone barrette for my top bun & do an exaggerated cat eye.

Requirements:

  1. Leopard print dress (check)
  2. Cat eye makeup (check)
  3. Bone barrette (could fashion)
  4. Hair in a top bun (check)

For my last cosplay idea, I wanted to do something sci-fi.  Since I had had such success on Amazon, I gave it another try.  I lucked out & found more non-slutty Star Trek options.  I chose a Classic Star Trek Science Officer mini dress.  I’m 5’4″, so this is probably not going to be as short as pictured on the model.  I could even wear black tights under so I don’t get too cold & take them off if I get too hot.

Requirements:

  1. Classic Star Trek dress (could buy)
  2. Starfleet Science Officer Badge (could buy)
  3. Classic Communicator (could buy)
  4. Black boots (check)
  5. Optional black leggings (check)

So there you have it, my SDCC cosplayer plan of attack.  I”ll be posting updates with pictures as soon as I have my components & we get closer to SDCC.  I will be doing a practice trail run in the upcoming weeks, so be on the look out for my pictures!
